A lovely Saturday sailing in Falmouth

Here at DSActive we are always looking for new sports and activities that we can get involved with. We’re really excited about our most recent project in Cornwall…sailing!

In August, with the help of the Mylor Sailability programme run by Mylor Sailing School, we ran a taster day in Falmouth. One of the DSActive went down to see how it went. We also took the opportunity to run a Coach Education workshop for coaches from all over Cornwall, from a wide range of sports and activities.

The weather was crisp when we got down to the harbour on Sunday morning. Coaches and volunteers from throughout Cornwall and with a wide range of expertise had come to take part in the training session. We enjoyed a few brews and planned how the day would pan out. Everyone got involved, contributing and sharing ideas on how to tailor the session. We split into groups and to bust myths and share first hand experiences from all their different roles and specialisations. Everyone found out a bit more about what is currently on offer around Cornwall.

After the coach training it was time to set up for the sailing taster session. Some people helped with getting the boats ready, others with the equally important task of setting up of games, snacks and warm drinks.

As the first sailors arrived the clouds seemed to take the hint and moved along, leaving the boats looking a lot more inviting. Sailors could chose between using a sailing boat or a power boat. Everyone had a taste of travelling around Mylor harbour and the power boaters got the chance to steer past the huge Kuzma Mini Russian tanker and into Falmouth harbour.

Once everyone was back on dry land there was quite a party atmosphere. Friends who hadn’t seen in each other in years were reunited, there was music (as some participants busked) and giant board games to play.

Overall, everybody was very positive about the day with quite a few expressing interest in joining the club and starting their RYA Sailability qualifications.

Thank you to everyone who came for the workshop and the taster session and to the Mylor Sailing School for hosting the event.

Let’s hope the sun continues to shine!
