Visiting the Electric Eels

The DSActive team are always looking into exploring new areas and meeting fantastic organisations we can work with and learn from, and in early 2019 we spoke to some of the coaches and swimmers at Electric Eels Swimming Club. Here’s what they had to say…

One of the Electric Eels swimmers:

How long have you been going to the Electric Eels?
5 years

Do you do any other sports or activities?

Dancing, trampolining, multi-skills sport

Why do you like swimming?

I like seeing my friends

What is your best memory of swimming?

Swimming galas

Pauline Walker, Founder of Electric Eels:

How long have you been involved with Electric Eels?

I founded the club 10 years ago after being involved with disability swimming for 25 years. I am passionate about all aspects of the club and I absolutely love all of the swimmers and volunteers.

What is your best memory from Electric Eels?

I have so many highlights! The launching of the club and of the synchronised session and watching both the swimmers and volunteers improve and grow in knowledge. On top of the club itself, taking synchronised swimmers to our first world championships and returning with an unexpected silver from Italy was fantastic, as was being honoured with the Queens Award to Voluntary Services.

What would you say to other coaches thinking of getting into Down’s syndrome sport?

There are so many highs (and of course some lows!) and you will really get so much out of it. It will change you as a person. Just remember that these young people take longer to learn, but once they have learnt it, that is it. Always focus on making them enjoy themselves and have fun! If any coaches need any help or guidance I am always on hand to help.

Another swimmer from the Electric Eels team:

How long have you been going to the Electric Eels?

As long as the club has been there.

Why do you like swimming?

It makes me proud.

What is your best memory of swimming?

The Synchro performance in Canada and learning all the strokes.

Anna, a coach with the Electric Eels:

How long have you been involved with Electric Eels?

About 8 years.

Why do you help at the session?

It’s my favourite part of the week! It’s always great fun and it’s very rewarding to help our amazing swimmers to achieve their potential.

What is your best memory from Electric Eels?

Too many too choose from…some of the best moments are seeing a child swim a length by themselves for the first time, master a new skill or win a race in a gala. Watching our synchro team compete internationally has also been amazing!

What would you say to other coaches thinking of getting involved in Down’s syndrome sport?

You won’t regret it. You’ll learn so much and have a great time doing it.

Thank you to the Electric Eels for letting us visit one of their sessions and speaking to us about their experience!
