As summer came back for one glorious mid-September weekend, Coventry Sky Blues in the Community and Inspire2Coach Warwick University joined forces to put on a fantastic festival of sport.
We went along to watch athletes try skills old and new and were even joined by a special guest!
Successful tennis and football sessions have been running in the Coventry area for a few years now.
To celebrate all the hard work, from players and coaches alike, that goes into these regular session, football and tennis players got together late this summer for a joint celebration of sport.
Participants got to develop their skills in both sports, got the chance to meet other athletes they hadn’t played with before, and had the chance to show off their skills to parents and siblings.
The day started off with a few tennis drills. Participants played floor tennis with each other and perfected their racket holding technique.
There were also relays, with teams dribbling balls around a slalom of cones, as well as different drills where they could get used to the motion of forehand and backhand shots. All the athletes showed good levels of hand eye coordination and everybody adapted really well to all the challenges they were given.
Then it was time to move onto football. Athletes took shots at a giant dart board, counting their scores and hitting their shots with increasing venom as the competition developed. Coaches gave pointers to help with accuracy, and by the end the points total was sitting quite nicely.
After some more tennis skills it was time to finish with a football match. Athletes and siblings alike played a high tempo end to end game with goals flying in at both ends. Supporters got to enjoy some excellent goal celebrations…with some taking priority over less important things like defending.
Finally to end the day, all the athletes got to meet Sky Blue Sam for a quick photoshoot and to get a goodie bag.
A great end to a great day!
