Leisure and Fitness Industry Training

In 2018 the DSActive team conducted some research into the leisure and fitness industry. We wanted to know whether people with Down’s syndrome were using their local facilities and if there were any barriers stopping them using them.

Our research found that over half of people surveyed used their local leisure centre less than five times a year.

Our research also showed that one of the main reasons for this is the difficulty potential users faced with booking classes or activities, with only 4% of those surveyed being confident enough to book classes on their own.

We also found that over 60% of those who do use their facilities would prefer to phone someone to book their classes, a potential issue for the industry going forward as more organisations move to online only booking.

The DSActive team have produced two workshops to help the leisure and fitness industry workforce make their facilities more accessible to people with Down’s syndrome:

  • Introduction to DSActive Leisure and Fitness Workshop,
  • DSActive Leisure and Fitness Workshop.
