In 2018, the DSActive team conducted some research in to the leisure and fitness industry, to gather information on whether people with Down’s syndrome use their local facilities, and if there are any barriers stopping them using the facilities.
Our research found that over half of people surveyed used their local leisure centre lass than 5 times a year. Our research also showed that one of the main reasons for this is the difficulty potential users faced with booking classes or activities, with only 4% of those surveyed being confident enough to book classes on their own. We also found that over 60% of those who do use their facilities would prefer to phone someone to book their classes, a potential issue for the industry going forward as more organisations move to online only booking.
Since conducting our research, we have developed a CIMPSA accredited workshop for interested professionals to learn how to better support people with Down’s syndrome to use their facilities and how to help them get the most out of their experience. To find out more about the workshop please email the DSActive team.
