Gymnastics

Gymnastics is a very popular sport for people with Down’s syndrome, especially those at a younger age. DSActive have been working with British Gymnastics to help train coaches on how best to support people with Down’s syndrome in to gymnastics. To find a disability provider near you please visit the British Gymnastics website here.

All people with Down’s syndrome will need to complete a Atlanto-Axial Instability screening before they can train or compete in gymnastics. This is to ensure that the person has no symptoms of the condition and it is, therefore, safe for them to participate in the sport. This screening can be administered by a GP, physiotherapist, occupational therapist or relevant medical professional, and should only take a few minutes. The screening form can be downloaded here https://www.british-gymnastics.org/technical-information/discipline-updates/disabilities and more information on neck instability can be found on the Down’s Syndrome Association’s website here https://www.downs-syndrome.org.uk/download-package/neck-instability/
